So what exactly is style?

In the Webster Dictionary, style is defined as, "a distinctive manner of expression". Style is how one expresses themselves, how they define who they are. Now this can be expressed in an abundance of ways such as writing, drawing, makeup, or even the way someone speaks. Finding your style is a very difficult thing to do and takes a lot of trial and error, but once you find it, it really does become your own distinct manner of expression.

Growing up, I always tried to find an outfit that was different. I wanted to stand out with my fashion, even at a young age. I went from crazy patterns and bright colors, to simple pieces with and statement jewelry. I guess one would say that my style has always been "different", not so much in a good way. Although what I wore wasn't popular fashion, I still achieved that goal of being different. It was up until the age of seventeen that I really found my own style, and portraying it through fashion is very important to me.

I like to be daring and love to try new fashions that are on trend, but my my style is still distinct. I found my style from the very simple task of looking, and I took inspiration from the street. The best way to become inspired is ultimately to just look around, and something is prone to catch your eye. When you see something you like, use it to create something of your own.

We live in a world where fashion changes in the blink of an eye. Fashion and style are two completely different things. Fashion is the clothes you buy while style is the way you make it look. You can keep up with the fast moving fashion trends while still remaining true to your own style. It is all about the way you wear the fashion and the way you portray it to look. For example, with the trend of sweatpants and more comfortably fitting pants can be styled in many ways. Gigi Hadid prefers to wear sneakers while Rihanna styled it with heels; it's all about what the individual likes.

In terms of finding your own style, I find the task of "looking" to be much more effective and insightful than anything else. What do you find yourself most attracted to? Think about next time you go out into the city, or find yourself scrolling through social media.

Overall, fashion has become a very important aspect to my life due to the level of expression that it allows. Next time you go to buy a piece of clothing that is trendy at the moment, think about how you could style it. Make it distinct and different to stand out within the large crowd of people wearing the same piece. If you can do that, then you have successfully found your own manner of expression.
